For Indian football fans, the breaking news is that FIFA decided to lift the suspension of the AIFF. What does that mean? It means that Indian football is back in the mainstream of international sports . Now India can participate in the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in October.
The ban, the suspension, has been lifted. All Indian clubs can now participate in all the tournaments anywhere in the world.
This all began a couple of weeks ago when FIFA took the unanimous decision to ban the AIFF. Why were they banned? simply because of third-party interference that was affecting the AIFF. It was the Supreme Court’s appointed committee of administrators. The central government had sort of a very urgent hearing from the Supreme Court in regards to the AIFF. What happened then on August 23rd was a landmark decision.
The AIFF elections will be held on September 2. Now there is a guideline on the process of how the elections take place. It is very very important to understand what has happened because the central government had a very urgent hearing on this practice.
Why do you see that things move in a very phonetic way? Within a couple of days of the ban being lifted.
Only 2 things could have removed the ban
- Third party interference had to end, so the committee of administrators had to go.
- Second, what happened was that the state associations now got the ultimate voting rights. As a result, 36 of the aiff’s state associations now have voting rights. Election dates have been announced.
So, that is why you see that FIFA decided to lift the suspension of the AIFF.
